ABSTRACT The invention concerns a cigarette having an external- heat-deformable, paper wrapper comprising a proportion of thermoplastic fibres or filaments, the peripheral conform- ation of the cigarette having been modified by the applic- ation of heat to the wrapper. The proportion of thermo- plastic fibres or filament in the wrapper is suitably not less than 40% by weight. The modification of the conform- ation of the wrapper may have been such as to provide an embossed-pattern effect over a portion or portions of the surface thereof or to produce a groove or grooves extending around and/or along the cigarette. In the case of a tipped cigarette, the modification of the conformation of the wrapper may comprise such deformation of a tipping wrapper as to improve the grip thereof on the tip and/or cigarette or to form flats on opposite sides of the tip. The invention also includes a method for modifying the peripheral conformation of a cigarette in which the cigarette, which has an external, heat-deformable, wrapper comprising a proportion of thermoplastic fibres or filaments, and a heated forming means are relatively moved in contact with each other in a direction transverse to the longitud- inal axis of the cigarette. If the cigarette moved in contact with the heated forming means is a double-length filter-tipped cigarette, a tipping wrapper enwrapping the full length of the filter element and a short length of each of the cigarette rods may thereby interattach the same.
