A data for encrypting multi-media data comprises the entry of an encryption index (18) into a determination data block (10, 30) of said data which indicates an encryption algorithm to be used. In reaction to the encryption index, an encryption algorithm is selected in the determination data block (10, 30) from a plurality of such algorithms. The multi-media data are encrypted using the selected encryption algorithm. Various other entries in the determination data block (10, 30), to which the multi-media data are allocated, free an encryption device and permit fast access to a databank of encrypted multi-media data and the customer and data-specific use of the multi- media data while respecting copyrights.
