A CIRCUIT AND METHOD OF HANDLING ASYNCHRONOUS OVERSPEED ABSTRACT There is disclosed a circuit which compensates for a data transmission speed difference between a local asyn- chronous terminal and a local data adapter. A remote asynchronous terminal is connected to a remote data adapter, the local data adapter is connected to the re- mote data adapter through a telephone system. The local asynchronous terminal transmits local data to the local data adapter, the local data contains a start element a plurality of data elements, and at least one stop ele- ment. The remote asynchronous terminal receives from the remote data adapter a remote data where the remote data contains the plurality of data elements from the local data. The circuit includes a local serial interface ar- ranged to receive the local data from the local asyn- chronous terminal and remove the start element and the at least one stop element from the local data leaving only the plurality of data elements. A local controller re- ceives the plurality of data elements from the local serial interface and replaces the start element. The local controller next creates a packet using the start element and the plurality of data elements. A remote controller receives and disassembles the packet. Next, a data extractor extracts only the plurality of data ele- ments. A remote serial interface receives the plurality of data elements from data extractor and replaces the start element and adds a shortened stop element to the plurality of data elements to create the remote data. Finally, the remote serial interface transmits the remote data to the remote asynchronous terminal.
