ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A circuit breaker having the advantages of com- pactness and reliability has contact blades pivotally mounted by pivot bearings on insulators and cooperating with stationary contacts, and telescopically extensible and retractable quenching tubes associated with the contact blades. Actuating mechanisms are connected to the contact blades by linkages, the contact blades being arranged in pairs and each comprising at its middle region an elbow linkage allowing the blades to collapse into a space between its pivot bearing and its actua- ting mechanism. The quenching tubes are pivotally mounted between the upper parts of the contact blades, and return springs are provided for returning the quenching tubes to rest positions between the upper parts of the contact blades. The spaces for receiving the collapsed contact blades are electrically insulated from one another and from the actuating mechanisms.
