A surgical instrument is disclosed for applying at least one circular array of fasteners. The surgical instrument comprises a housing having proximal and distal portions and an elongated shaft extending from the housing distal portion. The shaft has proximal and distal end portions. A fastener carrying cartridge is positioned at the shaft distal end portion. An elongated anvil retaining member is reciprocatingly movable within the fastener carrying cartridge, defining a hollow distal portion forming a tip at a distal end thereof. An anvil member is adapted for removable attachment to the elongated anvil retaining member.
