ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A circular surgical retractor apparatus comprising: a wire ring wherein the ring is formed a crimped wire which, when viewed from above or below, present a continuous series of adjacent radially outwardly directed recesses; and a plurality of retraction elements, each having a stem, a tissue-retaining hook at the forward end of stem and a row of stop along the length of stem each stop of the stem being locatable in any one of the recesses of the ring to prevent forward movement of the stem radially of the ring; and a retraction element of a retractor comprising a stem, a row of stops disposed along the stem and projecting from the stem, the stops being adapted to locate in the recesses of the ring of retractor to prevent forward movement of retractor element, and tissue-engaged hook attached to the forward end of the stem, the hook being the form of a loop-presenting a rearwardly directed recess.
