A circulating fluidized bed boiler comprises a furnace (1), a separator (3) which is connected to the furnace to separate fluidized bed material from a flow leaving the furnace, as well as a return duct (4) between the separator and the furnace to return the separated fluidized bed material into the furnace. The return duct comprises a loop seal (5) equipped with a heat exchanger (8) and a supply (9) of fluidizing medium and having an inlet (11) and an outlet (12), which open into a chamber (10) comprising the heat exchanger, i.e. a heat exchanger chamber, and are situated at different heights, the outlet being connected through a return conduit (7) to the furnace (1). The flow cross-section area of the outlet (12) is at an angle to the flow cross-section area of the inlet (11) in such a way that the fluidized bed material is transferred in the heat exchanger chamber (10) in lateral direction with respect to the inlet direction (A) of its inlet flow. The heat exchanger chamber (10) comprises individually controllable fluidizing means (13, 14) at different locations in the direction of the horizontal dimension of the flow cross-section area of the outlet (12).
