Cis-4a-Phenylisoquinolines Abstract of the Disclosure The compounds of formula I, Image I wherein (i) R1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen, R3 and R4 together are oxygen, and each of R5 and R6 is hydrogen, or (ii) R1 is hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or alkanoyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R2 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and (a) either R3 and R4, together, are oxygen, or methylene, and each of R5 and R6 is hydrogen, or (b) R3 and R6, together, form a bond, and each of R4 and R5 is hydrogen, are useful as analgesics, anti-depressants, tranquilizers and sleep inducers.
