An improvement in manual clamps such as C-clamps wherein a spring loaded holding face projects beyond the clamping face of the conventional swivel pad for initial contact with the work, sufficient clamping force being applied by the holding face to hold the work by friction on sloping or vertical surfaces while still allowing controlled movement of the work for final positioning. The spring means, which can take various forms, is made sufficiently stiff to hold the work securely by friction but also allows, by further deflection, advancement of the clamping face into final clamping contact with the work.
