ABSTRACT A clamping head carried upon a shaft and mounted rotatably in a frame has a flanged mandrel on which a sleeve carrying a roll of material is adapted to be clamped. The mandrel carries, between its flange and the end of the sleeve, a ring which is displaceable axially upon the mandrel to strip the sleeve. The frame carries an actuating mechanism which acts upon the said ring for the purpose of stripping the sleeve from the mandrel. The actuating device comprises a pressure element, having a drive, which in its inoperative position bears against abutments on the frame. The collar of the ring comprises at least two points, equally distributed around the periphery thereof, in which the ring is freely rotatable when the pressure element in in the inoperative position.
