ABSTRACT A clamping unit for use on railcar covers to clamp the cover onto a railcar to close the railcar. The clamping unit has a frame with a clamp pivotally mounted on the lower part of the frame. The clamp is movable between clamped and unclamped positions. A clamp moving lever is mounted on the frame and connected to the clamp in a manner that upward movement of the lever automatically moves the clamp to the unclamped position and downward movement of the lever automatically moves the clamp to the clamped position. With the frame mounted on a railcar cover, and with the cover lifted off a railcar using the lever, the cover is automatically unclamped from the railcar. A stacking pad is provided on the frame above the clamp for use in stacking covers one above the other during storage.
