In clarification systems it is necessary to have adequate actual tank retention time for gravitational separation to occur and thereby ensure a high quality output which is free of both hydrocarbons and particulates. However, to handle produced volumes and minimize capital expenditure it is desireable to maximize tank throughput. A method of feeding a skimming/vortex clarifier tank is disclosed. The method achieves an actual tank retention time which is nearly 3 times that typically achieved. The method utilises a tangential inlet convergent- divergent nozzle and has a tank discharge positioned in a bottom central portion of the tank. An improved floating skimmer having a swinging arm is disclosed. Additionally, a multi tank system in which a last spreader bar tank, primarily used to remove particulates, is disclosed.
