The present invention provides nucleic acids encoding polypeptides which encode a DNA methyltransferase. These nucleic acids can be used to stabilize transgene expression in transgenic plants, to alter the yield or biochemical qualities of plants to silencing targeted genes in plants <i>in vivo</i>.
