ABSTRACT OF THE DICLOSURE An aqueous clay-free thixotropic wellbore fluid for use in subterranean formations in the earth comprises water, at least 1% by weight of a brine forming soluble salt or mixtures of salts, MgO and a heteropolysaccharide prepared by the action of bacteria of the genus Xanthomonas on carbo- hydrates; the fluid is injected into a formation to contact the formation with the fluid, and the fluid is returned to the surface for regeneration and reinjection into the formation.
