A method of treating the surfaces of medical instruments which are contaminated with prions includes contacting the surface with a composition containing a source of peroxide ions, such as hydrogen peroxide, at a molar concentration of at least 1.5M peroxide (equivalent to approximately 5% hydrogen peroxide) and preferably, about 2M peroxide (approximately 7% hydrogen peroxide). The composition is optionally in the form of a gel. The composition is retained in contact with the surfaces for about 1-2 hours until all or substantially all prion contamination is removed.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de traiter les surfaces d'instruments médicaux contaminées par des prions. Ce procédé consiste à mettre en contact la surface contaminée avec une composition contenant une source d'ions peroxyde, tel que du peroxyde d'hydrogène, à une concentration molaire d'au moins 1,5M peroxyde (équivalente à environ 5 % de peroxyde d'hydrogène), de préférence environ 2M peroxyde (environ 7 % de peroxyde d'hydrogène). La composition selon l'invention peut facultativement se présenter sous forme de gel. Cette composition est maintenue en contact avec les surfaces contaminées pendant environ 1 à 2 heures, jusqu'à ce que toute ou sensiblement toute la contamination par prions soit éliminée.
