ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for cleaning and removing oxide layers from aluminum or aluminum alloy surfaces involves contacting the surface with a cleaning bath at a temper- ature up to about 90°C. for a period of not less than ? minute and then washing the treated surface. The cleaning bath comprises about 0.5% to 15% by weight of least one component providing carbonate ions, about 0.5% to 15% by weight of at least one component providing borate ions, up to about 1% by weight, and preferably 0.1% to 1% by weight of at least one surfactant, the balance of the bath comprising preferably deionized water or an alcohol solution including a straight or branched lower carbon alcohol.
