One or more sugar surfactants may be used to adjust the viscosity of a water-based surfactant-containing composition. A correspondingly thickened water-based surfactant-containing composition for cleaning and/or disinfecting or sanitizing hard surfaces contains one or more sugar surfactants and at least one antimicrobial agent. In addition, one or more sugar surfactants may be used to solubilize one or more perfumes in a water-based surfactant-containing composition and to control the cold cloud point and/or clear point of a water-based surfactant-containing composition and are used in a process for producing a thickened water-based surfactant-containing composition for adjusting the viscosity of the composition.
