ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is described a method and apparatus for cleaning material from a support surface, such as an imaging surface of a photocopier. The surface is moved in one direction relative to a cleaning blade that engages the surface. There are rest periods of no relative motion between the blade and surface. During these periods the blade is moved out of contact with the surface at a first position and is returned to engagement with the surface at a second position downstream of the first position. The relative motion between the blade and surface may be reversed with the blade still in engagement with the surface prior to the rest period. This reversal of relative motion tends to break up and remove the build up of material.
