2068997 9108375 PCTABS00005 A method of removing oil from oily cuttings obtained from a drilling operation of oil or gas wells, in which the cuttings are exposed in an extractor chamber (12) to a solvent for the oil, such as toluene or other suitable stabilised gasoline fraction. The solvent thus dissolves the oil, and the cuttings may then be separated from the solvent with the oil dissolved therein on a fine mesh conveyor belt. Alternatively the cuttings and solvent may be formed into a slurry in an agitating vessel and then pumped to a solid bowl decanting centrifuge (26) from which the solids are fed to a dryer (18).
