ABSTRACT A cleat for frictionally engaging a line consists of a fixable base with an upwardly extending portion merg- ing into a portion overhanging the base; an upwardly ex- tending arm is pivotally secured to the base with the free end of the arm terminating short of the overhang- ing portion. The surface of the free end of the arm is symetrical about the longitudinal and tranverse planes of the pivotal securement of the arm. The arm is mount- ed on a spindle in the base carrying a spring which bias- es the free end of the arm towards the overhanging port- ion when the arm is pivoted against the spring in either pivoting direction and towards the base with the free end of the arm engaging a line and forcing it against the underside of the overhanging portion. The surface of the free end of the arm remote from the upwardly ex- tending portion is tapered to provide a throat to fac- ilitate entry of the line and the surface also has edges to promote grip of the line after entry.
