ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for cleaving an optical fibre under axial tension is provided with a cleaver blade which is mounted as part of a rotatable cleaver. The cleaver is balanced about its axis of rotation and comprises a wheel mounted on an axle, and a cleaver blade attached to an arm which extends radially from the wheel. A hair spring drives the cleaver. The apparatus finds particular application in cleaving monomode fibres under normal working, rather than laboratory conditions.
