ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A climbing jack having a jack column along which a jack assembly surrounding the column is adapted to move. The jack assembly is divided into two sections separated by one or more hydraulic ram arrangements which move each jack section in turn relative to the other. Each jack section includes one or more pawl devices pivoting about support axis extending transversely of the longitudinal axis of the column whereby one or the other of the ends of each pawl device will engage a plurality of evenly spaced apertures or projections along the column such that when one jack section is moving relative to the column the pawl devices in the other jack section will be in engagement with an aperture or projection in, or on, the column. The relative movement between the jack assembly and the jack column being reversed by shifting the pawl devices into a position whereby their other ends are adapted to engage the apertures or projections in, or on, the column.
