A clinical appliance (10) which is useful for taking samples from a tissue or a tissue associated material is disclosed. The appliance (10) has a head (13), and a handle (11) and a pressure sensitive means which comprises the head (13) and the handle (11) attached by a resi- liently deformable member (12), and an instrument (14) retained in the head. Marks (2l) are provided respectively an the head (13) and the handle (11) to indicate that when the marks are aligned a se- lected force is being exerted on the instrument (14). A portion of the instrument (14) which in this case consists of a needle member for probing periodontal pockets. A handle (11) which is useful in a clinical appliance is also disclosed. The handle (11) is an elongate member having an attachment means at one end which comprises a pair of spaced apart parallel plates (18) and a shaped opening (17) intermediate the plates. The attachment means is to allow the fitting of a head to the han- dle. Adjacent to the attachment means is a grip portion (23) of the handle. The handle (11) tapers from the grip (23) over its length (19) to a distal end (24).
