Apparatus, methods, and systems for useful sampling of seed, wherein viability is maintained, are disclosed. Seed from one generation in a plant advancement experiment is individually sampled by removal and collection of tissue from the seed using a hand-held and manually operated tool having one or more cutting edges. The tissue is then processed to derive one or more biochemical, genetic, or phenotypic characteristic of the seed before a decision is made whether to utilize that seed further in a plant advancement experiment or other plant research and development. In some embodiments of the method, the sampling is controlled to remove a useful amount of tissue for analytical purposes without significant effect on viability potential of the sampled seed. In some embodiments, the sampling is controlled to deter contamination of the sample. In some embodiments, the seed is held in pre-determined orientation to facilitate efficient and accurate sampling.
L'invention porte sur des appareils, des procédés et des systèmes qui permettent un échantillonnage utile de semences préservant la viabilité de ces dernières. Selon l'invention, on échantillonne de manière individuelle des semences d'une génération lors d'une expérience d'amélioration des plantes, en retirant et en recueillant les tissus de la semence au moyen d'un outil tenu et actionné à la main possédant au moins un bord de coupe. On traite alors le tissu pour dériver une ou plusieurs caractéristiques biochimiques, génétiques ou phénotypiques de la semence avant de prendre une décision concernant l'utilisation de ladite semence dans une expérience d'amélioration des plantes ou dans un autre projet de recherche et developpement des plantes. Dans certains modes de réalisation de l'invention, on régule l'échantillonnage afin d'enlever une quantité de tissu utile à des fins d'analyse, sans influencer de manière sensible le potentiel de viabilité de la semence échantillonnée. Dans certains modes de réalisation, on maintient la semence dans une orientation prédéterminée afin de faciliter un échantillonnage efficace et précis
