ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A clock pulse control system for microcomputer systems. The control system has a central processing unit. A plurality of first input/output units are connected to the central processing unit and; at least one second input/ output unit is connected to the central processing unit. A selector channel is connected between the central processing unit and the first and second input/output units. The channel issues a select signal (S1) and selects at least one of the first and second input/output units according to a programmed control instruction from the central processing unit. A clock pulse generator is connected to the selector channel, to the central processing unit and to the first and second input/output units. The generator supplies clock pulses to the central processing unit and to the first and second input/output units. It generates a first clock pulse (?s) having a frequency (fs) to operate the central processing unit and the first input/output units. It also generates a second clock pulse (?1) having an optimum frequency (n.fs) to operate the second input/output unit when no select signal (S1) is applied to the generator from the selector channel. The second pulse has the operating frequency (fs) of the central processing unit when a select signal (S1) is applied to the generator from the selector channel. The arrangement is such that the second input/output unit is operated by the second clock pulse (?1) having the operating frequency (fs) of the central processing unit only when information is transferred between the central processing unit and the second input/output unit. However, the unit is operated by the second clock pulse (?1) having the optimum frequency (n.fs) when no information is transferred between the central processing unit and the second input/output unit.
