A high definition television receiver including di- gital signal processing circuits (118-128, 150) receives a high definition television signal containing narrowband high priority information from which a system clock is derived (155, 129), and low priority wideband informa- tion. After a channel change, a clock signal developed (137-139) from narrowband information associated with the previously tuned channel is used (134) as the receiver clock until a clock signal with a desired phase character- istic is developed (131, 133) from the narrowband infor- mation of the newly tuned channel.
