The apparatus is particularly useful for medical applications and includes a dispenser portion (804) with its own stored energy element provided in the form of an elastomeric membrane (992) and a coupling mechanism (807) for coupling a drug vial (820) to the dispenser (804) for controlled mixing of medicament (877) contained within the drug vial (820) with a diluent (832) stored within the dispenser portion of the apparatus via a sterile pathway.
