ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A signal emitted from a transducer responsive to the relative power applied during a welding process is enhanced electronically and mathematically to be of use in controlling welder operating parameters and/or in rejecting defective welds. Electronically the signal is refined to minimize unnecessary noise in the signal and mathematically the signal is modified and analyzed against a standard. In a high speed welding operation automatic means are necessary to assure weld quality and control welder operation since the rapidity with which the welding takes place is too fast for manual readjustment. The invention provides a circuit for monitoring weld quality in an electrical resistance heating forge welding process including: (a) welding means for providing welding electrical energy and mechanical force to a juncture to be welded; (b) an accelerometer transducer operatively associated with said welding means and held against at least one surface of the materials forming said juncture for movement therewith to pro- vide a signal response in the form of a seriatum instantaneous outputs related to changes due to said process which influence the various portions of said accelerometer transducer signal; (c) electronic calculating means connected to receive said accelerometer transducer signal response for conditioning same so that said accelerometer transducer signal response is enhanced and compared with a standard for issuing an output with respect to the difference from said standard, and (d) control means responsive to said compared difference output and connected to operatively regulate performance varying para- meters of said welding means. In addition the invention provides a control apparatus for a pulsing resistance type welder wherein the longitudinal side seam of a hollow cylindri- cal open ended thin wall container body is welded comprising: a pair of juxtaposed roller electrodes for supporting a traveling electrode wire of highly conductive material against a lapped joint formed by the longitudinal side seal of a hollow tubular member, a power supply means for providing high frequency pulses of electrical energy across said lapped seam as said hollow tubular body is carried through the nip of said rolls., an accelerometer transducer carried on the axle of one of said rollers for measuring acceleration of said roller towards and away from said lapped seam and providing a wave- form responsive to the relative acceleration between said rollers and said lap seam, an electronic circuit means connect- ed to receive the output waveform of said accelerometer and refine same by amplification, noise suppression and gravity substraction, an electronic calculating means designed to analyze said electronic circuit means output and develop a modified signal responsive to the character of said waveform and its relative difference with respect to a standard signal and a control means responsive to said difference between said electronic calculating means signal and said standard for pro- viding a measure to be used to control the relative energy supplied by said welder.
