A particulate animal litter including substrate particles and welan gum is described. The welan gum is present in the animal litter in an amount sufficient to cause, upon wetting, agglomeration of the animal litter into a mass of sufficient size and sufficient cohesive strength to be easily removed from a litter box. Preferably, the substrate particles are granules formed of materials obtained as coproducts from a wastepaper recycling process. A method of making the clumpable animal litter is also described.
