A clutch and brake device switchable by a compressible fluid, especially pneumatically, has an input shaft and an output shaft (5, 8) which are mounted in a housing (1) and terminate in a clutch chamber (17) in the housing (1). A clutch flange (7), connected to the input shaft (5) so that the clutch flange and the input shaft rotate together, and a friction disc (12) are arranged in the clutch chamber (17). The friction disc (12) divides the clutch chamber (17) into two working chambers (28, 29) pressurizable with different pressures and is arranged to engage the clutch flange (7) or an end face (49) of the clutch chamber (17) with a friction lining (15, 16) being inserted therebetween. To simplify and ensure that the working chambers (28, 29) are sealed largely independently of an abrasion of the friction linings (15, 16), the face (47; 49) of the clutch flange (7) and/or of the clutch chamber (17) facing the friction surface of the relevant friction lining (15; 16) has an annular groove (48; 50) concentric with the axis of rotation of the shaft.
