ABSTRACT A combined clutch and brake apparatus in which the braking torque is applied to the rotor (40) by springs (45). Pressurizing a pressure chamber (35) releases the brake and causes the clutch disc (15) to engage the rotor (40) thereby connecting the driving member (17) to the driven shaft. Exhaust vales (63) are disposed in radially extending passages (60) in a manifold (50) enabling the air to be rapidly exhausted from the pressure chamber.
