ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Run-of-mine coal is treated by mechanical comminution, screening and wet scalping to provide a selected portion subjected to chemical comminution by ammonia. The wet scalping is preferably effected by jigging to separate out a good coal light fraction and a high gravity refuse fraction; the remaining middlings, fraction only being subjected to chemical comminution, with or without prior removal of fines.
