18 COAL DESULFURIZATION ABSTRACT A substantial portion of the pyritic, organic, and sulfate sulfur compounds of coal are removed by a chemical cleaning process. The coal is crushed to a particle size smaller than about 1/8 inch, slurried, and passed into a treatment container. Alkaline solution is continuously introduced into the container so that there is a cross-wise flow of alkaline solution and slurry, and the spent alkaline solution is screened from the container and passed to a chemical recovery station. The temperature and pressure conditions in the container are maintained to act with the alkaline solution to effect removal of the sulfur components of the coal. The treated slurry is continuously washed to produce the final coal, the slurry having a consistency of about 40-70 percent throughout.
