ABSTRACT A burner for the partial oxidation of a particulate fuel to form a gaseous product, comprises a burner body having a mixing compartment and a discharge end; and conduits for supplying a par- ticulate fuel, such as coal slurry, and oxygen to the mixing com- partment, the burner having an end face with a discharge lip in the end face defining a nozzle for discharge of combustion mixture from the mixing compartment. An annular manifold is disposed adjacent the end face and extends circumferentially of the discharge lip, and a conduit supplies pressurised steam to the manifold. The manifold has a constricted opening positioned to deliver a pres- surised stream of steam from the manifold generally transversely of the burner end face towards the discharge lip, whereby to form a dynamic fluid shield across the burner face to preclude slag or ash particles from contacting the face and building up any solid accum- ulation.
