ABSTRACT An improved reaction process and apparatus for the cata- lytic hydrogenation of coal to produce hydrocarbon liquid and gas products. In the process the concentration of unconverted coal solids in the reactor is increased by use of a coal solids deflecting means such as a baffle criti- cally located with the upper portion of the reactor upstream of the effluent stream withdrawal conduit opening. Such deflection means provides for an increased concentration and prolonged reaction of coal solids usually larger than about 30 microns in the reactor liquid to produce increased con- version and yield of hydrocarbon liquid products, and thereby reduces the need for liquid-solids separation downstream from the reaction step. The solids deflection means preferably comprises a solid baffle attached to the reactor effluent withdrawal conduit upstream of its opening, and is preferably made removable from the reactor upper end.
