ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Coal is hydrogenated in a catalytic reaction zone to produce desirable hydrocarbon gases and volatile liquid products, and a liquid residue containing unconverted coal (char) and ash which is processed in a multiple zone hydro- cracker to recover gas and additional light liquid products and also to convert the char to hydrogen-rich gas. The hydrogen-rich gas recovered from the hydrocracker is fed to a steam reformer to produce the hydrogen needed in the hydro- genation reaction step, and the recovered light liquid products are combined with similar boiling range liquid product streams from the coal hydrogenation step to provide increased all liquid product. Fuel for the reforming step is provided by light hydrocarbon gases from the coal hydroliquefaction step.
