U.S. 772,580 ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A novel coal liquefaction-fluid coking process wherein better balance in energy utilization is obtained between process requirements for hydrogen and fuel, comprising (a) a coal liquefaction zone wherein coal is contacted with a hydrogen donor solvent, and preferably also molecular hydrogen in amount sufficient to furnish the process hydrogen requirements, at conditions sufficient to liquefy the coal and produce a reaction product mixture which is separated into components comprising high-BTU gas, essentially C1-C6 hydrocarbons, 1000°F-petroleum-like liquids which are receovered as a product, and a 100°F+ slurry, (b) a fluid coking zone wherein the 1000°F+ slurry from said coal liquefaction zone is fed, contacted with hot solid particles and cracked to produce a reaction product mixture comprised of high-BTU gas, essentially C1-C6 hydrocarbons, petroleum-like liquids which are recovered as a product, and a solid coke or char, (e) a hydrogen generation zone wherein said high-BTU gases from both the coal liquefaction and fluid coking zones are conveyed in sufficient quantity, and contacted with steam (or water) at steam reforming conditions sufficient to generate process hydrogen requirements, and (d) a char gasification zone wherein char from the fluid coking zone is fed, contacted with air (oxygen) and steam and partially gasified to generate low-BTU gas and low sulfur content solid char by-products in optimum balance to efficiently satisy process heat requirements.
