ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a coal liquefaction process including recyle of a product slurry comprising normally solid dissolved coal and mineral residue, the minimum slurry recycle rate is determined by a pumpability constraint on the solids level of the slurry contained in the feed coal mixing vessel. If the solids level in the feed coal mixing vessel rises above the constraint level, the slurry recycle rate must increase. For coals which generate a high mineral residue content, adequate dilution of the slurry in the feed coal mixing vessel requires the slurry recycle rate to rise to an economically impracticable level. In the present process, a portion of the product slurry is passed through a hydroclone to produce a second recycle slurry comprising hydroclone overflow. It is shown that deployment of the second recycle slurry accomplishes selective recycle of relatively small mineral particles. The process is performed with an extraneous catalytically active mineral whose particles upon recycle under the conditions of the process develop a mediam diameter as small as or smaller than the particles of recycle mineral residue generated from the feed coal, even though the extraneous particles as fed may have a larger diameter than the particles of mineral residue generated from the feed coal. The reduction in size upon recycle of the extraneous particles will tend to increase the concentration of these particles in the hydroclone overflow slurry.
