A B S T R A C T The invention resides in the area of separating coal from the accompanying gangue. The coal and gangue are contacted with water and a water-immiscible organic liquid, agitation applied, and the water fraction and organic liquid fraction are separated. Depending on the ratio of water and organic liquid to coal-gangue, the gangue and water are drawn off from the top of the mixture and the coal and organic liquid from the bottom or the water-coal from the top and gangue- -liquid from the bottom. The advantages produced are a lower sulfur content and lower ash content.
