ABSTRACT Hexagonal laminar alpha-aluminum oxide monocrystals having a grain size of about 26 to 250µ and a ratio of crystal diameter to crystal thickness of between about 3:1 and 7:1 is describes. The monocrystals are particularly suitable for use as a lapping, polishing, grinding and refractory material, as well as a new raw material in the art of oxide ceramics.
