An article is coated with a multi-layer decorative and protective coating having the appearance of stainless steel (Figure 2). The coating comprises one or more electroplated layers on the surface of said article and vapor deposited on the electroplated layers a stack layer containing layers of refractory metal or metal alloy alternating with layers containing the reaction products of refractory metal or refractory metal alloy, nitrogen and oxygen wherein the total nitrogen and oxygen content of these reaction products is from about 4 to about 32 atomic percent with the nitrogen content being at least about 3 atomic percent.
L'invention concerne un article recouvert d'un revêtement multicouche décoratif et protecteur présentant l'apparence de l'acier inoxydable (Figure 2). Le revêtement comprend une ou plusieurs couches galvanisées sur la surface dudit article et une couche empilée, déposée par évaporation sous vide sur les couches galvanisées, contenant des couches d'un matériau ou d'un alliage métallique réfractaires en alternance avec des couches contenant les produits de réaction du matériau réfractaire ou de l'alliage métallique réfractaire, en azote et en oxygène, le contenu total d'azote et d'oxygène de ces produits de réaction étant d'environ 4 à environ 32 pour-cent atomique, et le contenu en azote étant d'au moins 3 pour-cent atomique.
