COATED SEED AND METHOD OF COATING SEEDS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A seed coating is provided which consists essentially of (a) one or more additives bound to the seed by (b) a polymer composition consisting essentially of poly[acrylic acid], or poly[methacrylic acid] and salts thereof, and, a copolymer of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or salt thereof, and an alkyl ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, optionally with N-methylol acrylamide or N-methylol methacrylamide. Seeds treated with such a combination of additives and the polymer composition in neutral or alkaline aqueous solution, when dried, are provided with a coating from about 0.025 mm to about 2 mm thick which (i) has water and oxygen permeability so that the germination rate of the seed will not be adversely affected, (ii) has excellent binding ability to provide a tough non-friable film so as to minimize the problem of dusting or flaking off, (iii) has superior film-forming characteristics so as to be effective when the polymer composition is present in an amount less than 20% by wt, based on the total weight of dry coating on the seed, and (iv) provides adequate hydrophobicity so as to maintain a non- tacky surface which allows the trouble-free planting of seed with mechanical equipment ("plantability"). The polymer composition, without additives, has the unique property, in addition to the foregoing, of critical solubility in water.
