ABSTRACT COATING APPLICATION METHOD A method for application of a coating predominantly to cutting tools the base of which is composed of carbona- ceous material resides in that a carbide-forming material is evaporated in a vacuum by an arc discharge. Thereafter, the working surface of the base is cleaned and heated by cathode bombardment with ions of the carbide-forming mate- rial until a temperature is attained at which carbidization of the carbide-forming material with carbon of the base material takes place. The ions of the carbide-forming ma- terial are then condensed on the working surface of the base material.
