ABSTRACT The invention relates to the use of specific quaternary ammonium salts in coating baths for the cata- phoretic coating of electrically conductive substrates. The quaternary ammonium salts used have the following general formula: Image wherein R1 = H or CH3 R2 = H or CnH2n + 1 R3 = H or Image R4 = CH3 or CnH2n + 1 X? is an anion of an inorganic or organic acid and n is a whole number from 10 to 18. These ammonium salts enable thicker coatings to be deposited, while still exhibiting good adhesion, and are particularly useful in electro- deposition processes.
