ABSTRACT A coating composition contains a resin and fine particles of an electrically conductive substance and/or an electrically semiconductive substance. A coating film formed therefrom on a workpiece surface exhibits a varistor property represented by the equation: I = (V/V1)n wherein I is current density (mA/cm2); V1 is that voltage at which a current of l mA begins to flow as the voltage applied to the coating film is increased; V is the applied voltage; and n is an exponent showing a non-linearity between I and V which is 1.5 or more. The particles of an electrically conductive or semiconductive substance are preferably present in an amount of from 5 to 70 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the solids content of said coating composition, the substance preferably being molybdenum disulfide. The composition is applied to a metal article in a dry film thickness of 0.5 to 20 microns.
