A coating composition suitable for use as an automotive topcoat, particularly a clear coat in a composite color-plus-clear coating, is disclosed. The resinous binder of the coating composition comprises a polyepoxide and a urethane-containing polyacid curing agent having more than three carboxylic acid groups per molecule and an acid equivalent weight less than 500. The polyacid curing agent is formed from reacting a polyol component having at least three hydroxyl groups per molecule, a polyisocyanate and an anhydride of a polycarboxylic acid. The polyacid curing agents have relatively high acid functionality, low acid equivalent weights and good reactivity making them very effective curing agents for high solids coating compositions.
