ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An antifouling coating composition, e.g. for ships' hulls, comprises a biocide for marine organisms and a solution or dispersion of a binder polymer (A) which is an acid-functional polymer or a polymer hydrolysable to an acid-functional polymer. The coating composition contains a solution of a compound (B) of a polyvalent cation or of a precursor of such a compound at a molar ratio of polyvalent cations in the compound (B) to acid groups and/or groups hydrolysable to acid groups in the polymer (A) of 1:4 to 1:100. The polymer (A) and the compound (B) are capable of undergoing a crosslinking reaction when the composition is coated on a surface so that the polyvalent cation forms crosslinks between acid groups on different polymer mole- cules, and may be at least partially reacted in the com- position provided that it remains ungelled.
