A coating composition suitable for use as an automotive topcoat, particularly a clear coat in a composite color-plus-clear coating, is disclosed. The resinous binder of the coating composition comprises a polyepoxide and a polyacid curing agent having more than three carboxylic acid groups per molecule. The polyacid curing agent is formed from reacting a polyol component comprising an oligomeric ester having an average of more than three hydroxyl groups per molecule with a 1,2-anhydride of a cyclic dicarboxylic acid. The polyacid curing agents have relatively high acid functionality, low molecular weights and good reactivity making them very effective curing agents for high solids coating compositions.
