Coating compositions containing a film-forming polymer and cross- linked polymeric microparticles and articles coated with such compositions are disclosed. The crosslinked polymeric microparticles are prepared by polymerizing in aqueous medium a mixture of vinyl monomers which includes a hydrolyzable vinyl silane monomer. The crosslinked polymeric microparticles improve sag resistance and metallic pigment pattern control of the coating composition. A particular advantage of the microparticles of the present invention is that they can be prepared with high crosslink density enabling the formulation of high solids coatings.
