- 6 - A b s t r a c t Coating compound for silica bricks The porosity of silica bricks ranges between about 15 and 25%. Only less than 1% of the pores are closed because of the low glass content. Consequently, silica bricks do not have a compact fired skin. The object of the invention is to enable the surface of silica bricks intended more particularly for the construction of the walls of pitch coke ovens to be protected against the penetration of liquid and gaseous substances and prevent graphite incrustations as far as possible, by the use of an extremely simple and relatively inexpensive method. To this end, according to the invention, a suspension of water-glass powder and glass powder together with a stabilizer if required, e.g. hydroxy ethyl cellulose, in a concentrated water solution, is applied to the surface of a fired or unfired silica brick, dried and then baked in. This gives a substantially sealed and smooth surface.
